As a journalist covering defence in Hyderabad where a large number of India’s defence establishments are located, he writes on the country’s latest weaponry. His writings on the short-comings in the army have also resonated in the Indian parliament and the defence ministry which took note of them initiated measures to rectify them. He exposed the fact that Indian army decorated soldiers were forced to wear what are called ‘tailor copies’ of medals as the originals were not given to them. Consequent to this, the Ministry of Defence placed an order for 7.06 lakh medals to be manufactured.
Of significance is his reportage on Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) who are settled among other countries, the United States of American (USA), nations in the middle-east including Saudi Arabia and UAE.
As one who believes in journalism with a human touch, he has reported about the difficult circumstances Indians live in, in the middle-east. Because of his reportage, the then union minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj reached out to many women in distress who were trafficked and forced into sex slavery.
India is the largest producer of films and the Telugu film industry is the most vibrant. Ch Sushil Rao’s writings on the economics of the industry has made the industry to sit up and take notice to introduce measures to keep it going. His film reviews are incisive, are unbiased and hold mirror to what is going wrong with cinema.
Ch Sushil Rao has busted several rackets and exposed illegal activities and reported about misappropriation of public funds. His sting operations have resulted in saving many lives, including that of a newborn baby which was put up for sale, and a minor girl who was being forced into marriage with an aged man. Exposing the still prevailing evil practice of ‘Devadasi system’, he got the government to take steps to prevent women from being offered as a ‘prostitute’ to local deities. In the system, the devadasi can be used by any man in the village to satisfy his lust, even against her wishes.
Ch Sushil Rao also highlighted the prevalence of ‘untouchability’ in Telangana where the so-called lower castes are not even allowed to draw water from the same well as that of the ‘upper castes’.
He has also authored books which are largely based on the Bible. The books include “The 11:59 God of King David”, “King David’s God on call 24/7”, “The Gospel Truth newspaper book on the life of Christ”, and “Blood Money” which are available on Amazon as e-book downloads. The print editions are also available in book stores in Hyderabad.
